Alex Tiller's Blog on Agriculture & Farming: Hydroponic Farming Continued

  • Tom Alexander · 1 year ago
For the past 20 years, The Growing Edge magazine has been reporting on such farmers who have added or switched over to hydroponic operations.
One such article was on Cornell University's prototype 1/2 acre hydroponic operation showing how farms can do this for supplementing their income year round.

I enjoy reading your magazine. It is very insightful and I frequently recommend it to people. Thanks for checking out my blog and making sure that my commentary hydroponics is accurate.

Wow - good day to you Alex. My name is Jimmy Gordon and I am from South Africa. I just purchased a small 35hectares piece of land in the Langkloof area (this is our local apple and pear producing area). I am in the construction game and we are getting quite fed up with moving around all the time and we are very interested in hyrophonic and organic farming as far as vegetables is concerned. Can you give me any advice or books to recommend how to get started from A to Z please , seeing that I have never farmed before. I sit possible to pland avocado trees in a tunnel? I will sincerely appreciate it if you could reply seeing that hydrophonic farming is still not a big thing here in SA.
Regards and compliments of the season to you

I have a 4 acre plt of land in sw Florida and am considering starting a hydroponic farm. Where should i start in going about this?

    Hi Fred,

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you.

I would reach out the guys at AmHydro. They sell the hydroponic equipment and train users on it.

Also contact University of Florida Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences. (http://www.ifas.ufl.edu/IFAS_facts.html) Find out if they have a professor that specializes in hydroponics. (I am sure they do) It may be more for a breeding/genetics program and less focused on food production and operations, but he/she should be able to help you find local help.

Good luck. Let me know how it goes.
